How to use dandelion root tea

Characteristic properties of the plant

Dandelion – Tarakacum officinale Web. – and its varieties are perennial plants of the family Compositae. The roots are fleshy. The leaves are collected in a rosette, glabrous, of various shapes. The flowers are yellow-orange, sometimes with reddish-brown patterns, lingual, collected in compact baskets, which are arranged on hollow stalks. The whole plant contains milk juice.

Reading method

The roots are dug in the second half of summer or autumn, when the leaves begin to wither. The removed roots are cleaned from the above-ground parts and from the root necks and washed.

Do not pick the roots of flowering plants because they are of poor quality.

Drying method

After washing, the roots are left for a few days in a dry and ventilated place in a layer 5-6 cm thick, then they are cut crosswise. Then continue drying. The roots are arranged in a thin layer on frames or blankets in the air or in a dryer at a temperature of up to 40 °. Dry roots should not bend, but break.

From 4.5-5 kg of fresh roots, 1 kg of dry roots was obtained.

Description of the finished plant

Simple or slightly branched roots, 10-15 cm long, 0.10-1.5 cm thick, longitudinally striped, sometimes spirally twisted. Young thin roots are light brown, and old ones are dark brown. The fracture is flat. After soaking with water, the bark swells strongly and when observing its cross section with a magnifying glass, concentric gray, light and dark lines can be seen in it, and the wood in the central cylinder has a non-radial structure. The entire center cylinder is usually yellow. The smell of the root is not typical, its taste is slightly bitter.

Quality requirements

According to BDS 2998-57, moisture is allowed no more than 12%; finely crushed parts – not more than 0.5%; changed parts (with darkened interior, moldy, etc.) – no more than 3%; other parts of the plant (aboveground parts) – not more than 1%; parts of other plants – not more than 0.5%; lateral mineral impurities – not more than 1%. The roots must not contain live insects and larvae.


In dry and ventilated rooms in well-prepared packages. Insects often attack them and can be eaten by worms if kept undried or in damp rooms.
