JAMES COOK AND THE WORLD’S DISCOVERY OF THE POWER OF THE TEA TREE

1770. James Cook and his men first landed on the Australian coast. Discovering the fauna and flora of this large island, hitherto unknown, they notice a small bush with dense green leaves. James Cook used this plant to make tea. Hence the name of this plant at the time when it was introduced in Europe: tea tree.

After the discovery of this new species, various scientific tests were conducted, which confirmed a number of useful properties of tea tree essential oil: bactericidal, antiviral, antiseptic. After the discovery of the tea bush, it began to be planted all over the world and adapted to different climates in the world (South America, Africa, the United States). Its effectiveness was such that during World War II, the Australian government decided to include a bottle of tea tree essential oil in the pursuit of its soldiers. Anyone who cultivated this shrub was not obliged to wage war, because the role they played, the production of medicine to avoid infections of wounds and parasites, was considered important.

TEA HARVEST

The tea bush with thick leaves is part of the Mirtaceae family. Fresh and aromatic green leaves are collected, which give the smell of camphor. It grows in humid, warm, swampy or slightly mountainous areas. The best time to collect leaves is during the Australian summer, ie between November and December. The seeds are very small, the size of peppercorns. You have to wait at least a year (ideally between 13 and 15 months) to be able to move on to the first harvest. When tea tree essential oil began to be commercialized, the collection was done by hand. In order to recover the leaves on the tea tree trees, the collectors went with cloth bags and a knife along the river banks. The mission was a bit delicate, because the leaf had to be cut well, without making any kind of cut or breaking, so that it could retain its vitality and stay fresh. The picker could collect up to 1 ton of leaves per day, which is equivalent to about 10 liters of essential oil. I started on the 20th. century, demand increased significantly, which is why plantations began to expand. In the end, they discovered that this shrub grows better if it is planted in groups, leaving a distance of about 50 cm between them. The leaves must be distilled on the same night as they are collected, so that the obtained essential oil is of good quality. The quality of the plantation varies from year to year.
